Public Service Activities In Re-entry
Knitting Behind Bars
Goal: Provide activity that productively engages incarcerated individuals to give back to their community
During the fall of 2009, Lynn Zwerling, a retired business owner and community volunteer, founded the Knitting Behind Bars Project at Jessup Pre-release Unit. Each project runs for six weeks for the beneficiary designated by participants at the start of the project.
For this first project 35 residents at JPRU are knitting 100 comfort dolls for children in Baltimore City. Ultimately the dolls are distributed to the police officers and fire fighters, who when called to an emergency, will hand a doll to a child being traumatized.
We look forward to expanding a great project that connects many lives to other correctional institutions that have expressed interest.
